Villiger was founded in Switzerland by the couple Jean and Louise Villiger. When her husband died Louise continued to run the company on her own for 16 years. In 1918 the brothers Villiger Max and Hans took over the business and made it one of the largest in Europe. In 1951 Heinrich Villiger took over the company and bought Cuban Tobacco in an effort to make the company the largest private Cuban tobacco supplier in Europe, which he did.
